Nature Group Page

Welcome to the Dublin Camera Club Nature Group’s web page

The DCC Nature Group is a special interest group for members of Dublin Camera Club.  We share a love of Nature and Wildlife photography, and we are at all different levels in the club some very Novice and some very Advanced, most somewhere in between.  With Covid restrictions in place and with the limitations on the use of the Club building, we meet on Zoom on the 4th Thursday of the month.  Over the year some meetings will have invited speakers on specific nature topics while other meetings will be members discussing issues around Nature & Wildlife (N&W) Photography.

Monthly Meeting

Our next meeting is on 26th May at 8.00 pm and will feature:  The PARK CHALLENGE with members showcasing their photos taken for this challenge.

We plan on allocating a substantial part of our Nature Group Evening in May to feature members showing photos they have taken in their local (or perhaps not so local) Park.  If you spend more time along a river or canal that would also be suitable.  The photos can either show the range of nature available in the area, or focus on a specific plant or creature, or show the park at different times of year, or even compare different parks!  So the challenge is to get out over the next week or two and take some photos!

To ensure that we have enough volunteers for the night to be viable we would really appreciate an email from you ASAP indicating if you are prepared to take part - you don't have to have the photos available until the day before the event.

Our Gallery

We have, in addition to this web page, a gallery of Nature Images which is now live with images submitted by members based on the current monthly theme.

All members are encouraged to submit images on these themes for the gallery.  The next gallery update will be at the beginning of July.  Photos for this update should reflect your nature journey and you can submit up to ten of your favorite nature images to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. not later than the 30th June.

When submitting photos please adhere to these suggestions to facilitate the presentation of the images:

  • Images should be sized to 3000 pixels on the long side - for more details see competition rules - section 1.4.
  • Images should conform to the definition of nature photography – see HERE.
  • The file name should be the title exactly as it is to appear in the caption for the gallery  Do NOT include your name.  The title should include the species name, if appropriate and the location where it was sighted or captured (example 1: Pelican - Fota Wildlife Park |  Example 2: Reed Bunting - Tymon Park)
  • Please include a list if the titles in the face of the email to facilitate copying and pasting.

What is Nature or Wildlife photography?

Most members just want to enjoy photographing nature and wildlife but there is a precise definition of what is Nature or Wildlife photography (they do differ) and what you can do to an image in post processing to enter it in a competition under either heading. If you are entering competitions in either genre then these definitions are necessary.  These are set out by FIAP/IPF HERE  and endorsed by Dublin Camera Club for any of its competitions under either category.  An easy to understand interpretation is on this LINK

Nature Photographers' Code of Practice

Linked HERE is a code of practice from the UK RPS Nature Group.  Basically it is a code of practice that we would subscribe to.  There are references in it to pieces of legislation which are of course UK Acts.  We will in due course identify the Irish equivalents where such exist.  Meanwhile we remember that we are nature lovers first and photographers second so the basic principle is: The welfare of the subject is more important than the photograph.
